"My laboratory has a dual infrastructure with clinical research space in the Airway Clinical Research Center on the 13th floor of Moffitt hospital and bench space in the Health Sciences East research tower at the UCSF Parnassus Heights Campus. This dual infrastructure allows me to have both clinical and bench research activities. The experimental approach I use involves molecular analysis of biospecimens from highly characterized human subjects combined with cell- and animal-based model systems to address specific research questions about asthma and other airway diseases. My laboratory is staffed by clinical research coordinators, a data manager, bench research assistants, and a mix of M.D. and Ph.D post-docs. All of us share a passion for uncovering new insights about asthma and other airway disease that we hope will ultimately lead to new treatment approaches for patients."

John V. Fahy, MD, MSc received his M.D. degree from University College Dublin, Ireland in 1985. After internal medicine training in Dublin, he started a Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at UCSF in 1989 where he completed research training with Dr Homer Boushey's laboratory. Since joining the faculty at UCSF in 1993 he has built a research program in airway disease that is focused on mechanism-oriented studies of epithelial cell dysfunction in asthma, COPD, and cystic fibrosis. In addition to his research activities (which include direction of the UCSF Airway Clinical Research Center), he is clinically active in the intensive care unit and the UCSF Chest Faculty Practice. |
